In their latest “Owner’s Manual” Doctors Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz recommend incorporating turmeric and essential omega-3 oils in the form of 2 grams of fish oil, walnuts or DHA oil into the daily diet. According to current research, most, if not all, diseases are rooted in inflammation. Doctors Roizen and Oz write that reducing inflammation with these two supplements and a daily 30-minute walk is key to health.
Reducing Inflammation
The process of inflammation generates free radicals, which cause oxidative stress, a process often compared to the rusting of metal. Reducing inflammation is essential for achieving optimal health.
Turmeric, which gives curry its vibrant yellow color, is the source of the potent antioxidant compound curcumin. Curcumin offers benefits in arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other disorders directly caused by inflammation. Turmeric is found in curry and mustard and it’s available as a spice and in supplements containing turmeric or curcumin.
Omega-3 oils likewise have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that these compounds also benefit health by improving cognition and reducing depression by helping restore the structural integrity of brain cells. The human brain has a 60 percent fat content, primarily omega-3 oils. Omega-3 oils are an integral component in brain tissue membranes and blood vessels. With insufficient omega-3 oils, the brain must rely on inferior sources of fat, which are associated with impulsive behavior, hostility and cynicism. The higher the content of omega-3 oils in the brain, the higher the amount of gray matter.
