The two most common causes of hyperthyroidism in women are Graves' disease, which is an autoimmune disorder, and toxic multinodular goiter. Unfortunately, there are quite a few doctors who don't realize how common it is to move from Hashimoto's thyroiditis to Graves' disese. Best, Elaine

- omega
Most everyone is deficient in omega-3 oils unless they're following a Mediterranean type diet. At one time, when we mostly ate farm produce, our diets had much more omega-3 than omega-6 oils. Now, with processed foods, the balance has shifted and we're deficient in omega-3 oils. Good sources of omega 3 oils include fish oils and flaxseed oils. Read more on reducing inflammation with omega-3 oils.

Thanks for the update. Not fun. Well, I think since I was previously hypo too and now am experiencing hyper symptoms..I am similar in the manner of going from possibly Hashis to Graves. I had been just experiencing my eye symptoms, but last night (I was greatly stressed) I could not sleep a wink and felt buzzed....so I suspect that I will have elevated T4 and T3 next check (last time they were normal) along with a low TSH (It was a "bit low" last ti). Well, I also am leary of RAI uptake (am definitely leary of RAI ablation). It is the United States docs that seem to want to do RAI things, as I was reading UK e-sites, and they don't seem to go that way nearly as much. Interesting. Be strong. It is not easy..but hopefully things will get better...some day? I guess as you say now, we are just searching for answers. Thanks for your report!

Hey I've had a really really bad day. I had major family problem! I'm so stressed! The number one Thyroid problem to avoid. I'm really upset about the rai scan.and I'm really worried about my eyes! They called today it will be a month before I can see the eye doctor! So I have to stay like this and now I'm worried about eye surgery! I have hashi antibody but I have graves also I'm really still confused! Last night I didn't sleep well seemed like I kept sweating! Very restless! I still don't see why they have to do the scan and Even alittle nuclear iodine scares me. I really don't know what to do Shirl

Yes, like you, major stress here too recently! I think it is a vicious cycle in a way...stress exacerbates/triggers Graves/TED and also Graves makes one more stressed in reactions/general! Yes , I wonder too why one would need that RAI test. Assuming it does provide more info, how would that "extra" info direct/change treatement? Is it truly necessary, as you say. Last night , I actually did get to sleep (unlike the night before)(took quite a while to fall asleep, but at least I did!) but fear I had "sweats" for the first time (unless I dreamed that, but doubt it! ha!). Well, I have to wait quite a while for my first appt with the Endo. The eye doc I went to was my brother in law...so he was not really an eye doc who specializes in this. Take care!!! (wish we could make our "stressors" disappear, eh?).

I had another bad night! My eyes seem worse sinse I stopped the ATD's. I tried to talk to my husband about all of this and now he's really in a bad mood! [what was I thinking] No support!!!! I forget I can't talk to him at all! I keep going over this scan they called me yesterday said she had it set up for 4/19 I told her doc said three weeks. He said this is safe and that you really didn't have to do anything after the test.If that's so how's come their sending me two pages of after test don'ts. I'm really upset today is my day for crying! I'm about as down as I can be and I feel very alone! Shirl

Sorry to hear you had a bad night again...did you have sweats again? Anyway, yes, I know about nonsupportive husbands! Boy, do I! It seems they may think it is all in our head or that we are over reacting..but the mind/body connection esp with thyroid matters is very real. If you do have that scan, I heard you should also have prednisone to help prevent eye problems ( Elaine can likely confirm or correct this if necessary). I read in another forum of a lady who did have eye surgery and she was very pleased and said she felt much better and you could not even tell she had had surgery. At least that is encouraging...eh? Try not to cry..but boy howdy, I know that is VERY hard not to do when upset with all this as the it makes a person feel so nervous and volatile! I know about feeling alone too. It is hard for others to understand, I think.

OOps..I meant that lady who had had eye surgery for TED said you could not tell she had had surgery ...in a good way, that is! She seemed to think she was feeling back to normal and was well satisfied with her surgery. Got to thinking my prior post could be construed in a way I did not intend! ha! B^)
