Hi,
Urticaria is also a common symptom in hypothyroidism. There are several papers describing urticaria occurring in people with thyroid antibodies and normal levels of thyroid hormone. Treatment with levothyroxine brought the levels into the high end of the range and resolved the urticaria. Best, Elaine

Hi,
Sauerkraut, particularly the Korean variety, is reported to combat viral infections. Since many viral infections cause rash, this could fit with what you're saying.

Is there a specific test for this? My doctor's had to run different blood tests during this process. My thyroid screening came back normal. I have heard some thyroid problems are more difficult to detect. I do not have a weight issue. I started going to the gym back in November 2006 and I noticed that my weight did not change at all. My weight remained the same and I continued to feel sluggish until May, 2 weeks after I was put on this diet. I have lost 6 pounds and not quite as sluggish as I had been feeling. I did read up on hypothyroidism and some of the symptoms I have been experiencing are listed. I will ask my doctor next week. Thank you.

Hi,
Often, rashes and itching (urticaria) and sometimes swelling (like giant hives) occur in people with thyroid antibodies before thyroid disorders develop. The best way to diagnose this would be with tests for thyroid peroxidase, thyroglobulin, and TSH receptor antibodies. If they're present, patients are treated with levothyroxine, a form of thryoid replacement hormone. Best, Elaine

People with autoimmune disorders often develop skin disorders. For instance, hives are very common in people with autoimmune throid diseases. In this case they can appear in times of stress and often emerge on the neck and face. They can also appear for no apparent reason.
Another common type of rash that frequently remains undiagnosed is a condition known as dermatitis herpetiformis a href="http://autoimmune-skin-disorders.suite10..."Dermatitis herpetiformis, a disorder common in celiac disease and also autoimmune thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

I'm working as a temp and don't have medical benefits yet. I'm experiencing some symptoms that are weird!

Several times a day my palms, soles, armpits, scalp will itch. I have NO rash or dry skin. Looking at my skin you'd never know anything was wrong. I'm not eating anything different OR using any new perfumes/soaps/shampoos. It's not that kind of reaction. I dont' notice it happening at specific moments. It just happens. I had a pregnancy test 3 weeks ago...it was negative, but have had sex since...when this is attributed to pregnancy, would the itching occur so soon?

ANY IDEAS of what else this might be????

Hi,
Rashes and itches have so many causes that it's difficult to pinpoint what might be going on. Food allergies often cause the itching palms and the itching you mention can occur before symptoms progress to rash. Have you tried eliminating any foods. Also, ragweed and similar weeds can cause transient symptoms if you spend time outside and have allergies. Pregnancy isn't usually considered one of the top causes. Best, Elaine

Hi again,
I've tried the saurkraut route and so far nothing has improved. If anything, it is worse. No visable rash, just extreme itching on my palms, bottoms of my feet, around my ankles, and at times between my fingers. It will come on quickly if I put my hands in water. I'm also suffering from blurry vision at times. This doesn't happen very often, but causes concern. I am going to make an eye appointment and see if the eye doctor can spot something wrong. I just feel like I'm going out of my mind with the itching. How can so many people have the same symptoms and no answers.

Hi,
Itchiness and rash are one of the most common reasons for seeing a doctor. And unfortunately, it can be often hard to pinpoint the source of the rash. You might want to see an allergist or dermatologist along with the ophthalmologist to see if they can help you.
Iodine can trigger rashes and itching. An allergist can give you different samples of topical ointments to try, and hopefully you'll hit onto something that works. Best, Elaine

hello,
Well, I have been following my bouts of itchy hands and feet and keeping track of what I've been doing including my meals. I am now sure that it is the uric acid in my body that is causing the itch. When I eat meat,my hands and feet itch and some other places on my body. I am also getting pain in my toe joints. I had an appointment with my doctor and it was confirmed that I had a higher than normal uric Acid level with causes "GOUT". I will continue to monitor my diet and the episodes of itching, but I am almost positive it is related to the consumption of meat. Meat is high in Purines and the purines increase the uric acid in our bodies. The itch is followed closely by the pain in my feet and in some of my other joints. It would be interesting to know if there are many others who are suffering from Gout with the itching as well. My doctor said she had not heard about itching as a symptom of Gout, but lots of doctors are finding out things they never knew before. Check it out with your doctors... have a uric acid test run.
